YUREI : FRAGRANCE OF A GHOST
published on 2021-09-02“The perfume is the spirit that designs it, it is the spirit that composes it. Material and immaterial, perfume as a transparent entity.
Impalpable, this body, this volatile soul is a messenger that comes to our receptors, our emotions, our memories, our memory.
Allegory of perfume, the spirit is that olfactory form in the air we breathe, breathe in, breathe out and let us know we are alive. “
An olfactory exhibition …
“From matter to spirit” is an ephemeral exhibition, imagined and conceived by Pierre Bénard, perfumer-creator.
Its wake will exhale from Saturday September 11, 2021 to Saturday November 27, 2021 at the Alban-Minville cultural center in Toulouse.
Through a scented creation, that of a ghost, he breaks down the art of perfume by presenting native materials, natural extracts, synthetic molecules, taste sensations, accords …
… and multisensory
“Perfumes, colors and sounds respond to each other”, Baudelairean verse which has always represented the spirit of OSMOART.
This is the reason why, during this exhibition, Pierre Bénard invites artists to be inspired by the fragrance conceived through photography, body language, articulated sounds, projections, music, poems.
A big thank you to Miku Koyama for her voice and for her reading of the Japanese version of the poem “Le parfum” by Charles Baudelaire from the series “Un fantôme” in the collection “Les Fleurs du Mal”; as well as to our Japanese friends Shinobu Daikuhara & Toshihiko Honkura for their presence in this translation quest.
This voice, you will be able to hear it in the musical creation composed by Pierre Bénard with Wilfried Besse for the lyrics and the singing and Matthieu Gastaldi for the part of drums whose recording was carried out in the desacralized church of Seran to obtain a better reverberation. A thank you for the vocalization tests of Luna Maria Briaud.
Music mixed by the sound engineer of the Studio du Frigo, Victor Pezet and spatialized on an acousmatic installation in 12.0 by the composer and sound artist, Rodolphe Collange, during the opening on Saturday September 11.
For the image, the participation of Margot Lançon aka Echovisuelle for her videos in projection and the photographer Nicolas Sénégas capturing the contortions of Lise Pauton of the Compagnie Raie Manta, some research of which is presented below.
IN AN EMPTY HOUSE
SEE THE DUST FLAKES FLOAT
I’M THE ONE WHO HAUNTS YOU 俺はお前を捕まえる
IN YOUR DESPERATE HOURS
I’M THE ANGRY GHOST
I’M THE ONE WHO WHO HATES YOU お前のことが嫌になる
YOU CAN’T SEE ME お前には見えない
CAN YOU FEEL ME ?
I’M THE AIR AROUND YOU
YOU CAN’T SEE ME お前には見えない
CAN YOU FEEL ME ?
I’M THE PAIN INSIDE YOU 俺はお前が抱える痛み
I’M THE WIND BETWEEN YOUR EARS
I’M THE SUM OF ALL YOUR FEARS
I’M THE VOID THAT LIES WITHIN YOU お前に内在する空虚感
I’M THE BULLET IN YOUR GUN
I’LL MAKE ROOM FOR EVERYONE
IN THE GRAVE THAT I DUG FOR YOUお前が眠る墓を拵えている
YOU CAN’T SEE MEお前には見えない
CAN YOU SMELL ME ?
I’M THE GHOST BENEATH YOUR BED
I’M THE VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD
YOU CAN’T SEE MEお前には見えない
CAN YOU SMELL ME ?
I’M THE GHOST BENEATH YOUR BED
I’M THE VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD
Testimony
“At first, a feeling of imprisonment and suffocation came over me. As if pure air no longer existed … As I moved forward my body struggled, I was hot and my head was compressed… the smells, becoming perfumes pierced me and became unbearable, I sometimes seemed to smell death Sliding my head in the giant origami was no longer tolerable… need for air, need to breathe, terrible urge to breathe… Then, I read the texts, then I traveled in the poems and the words. I returned to the perfumes, and this morbid sensation of the first draft, gave way to the journey of the senses, to discovery and to pleasure to smell. It occurred to me that YUREI, the phantom perfume represented a bridge between the soul and the body, a passage which is not visible to the naked eye but which one perceives while breathing… “
Lise’s words testifying to her visit to the exhibition.
An olfactory conference
